Hair, There, Everywhere
Surprise, surprise! There’s something else that happens during the first 6 months of postpartum that no one tells you about. Hair loss. Lots and lots of hair loss. (BTW, so glad to be back!)
Normally, my fine hair falls out a decent amount. There’s always a strand here and there. I call it my confetti. However, postpartum hair loss is a completely different animal. I was about 4 months postpartum and I was washing my hair, and it would not stop falling out. I told myself not to panic… then I brushed my hair while it was still wet. The panic set in.
The level of tangles I had to get out was crazy. Again, fine hair usually tangles easily, but this was a nightmare. By the time I was finished, you couldn’t see the bottom of my brush.
I was in shock and started looking for bald spots. Maybe that’s not how it works… yes, yes it is. I could see my scalp when I lifted the front of my hair. I was in full-blown anxiety attack mode. “I’m going to be bald!!” I already started Googling the best wigs.
Through my deep dive into hair growth products, serums, and vitamins, I came across a couple of life savers.
I had been following Angelo David Salon since my days working for Tyra Banks. Incredible products made by incredible people who give back to the community.
I was blessed with Angelo David’s Hair Detox for Women. It helps hair get stronger and grow, along with other vitamins that help nourish skin, nails, and help with stress and inflammation… um, yes, please.
Hair Detox has biotin, keratin, and zinc, among other greats like vitamins D, E, B6, and B12. After I started to take the vitamins, I could feel not only my hair getting stronger and not breaking while brushing, but I also felt a boost of energy throughout my day. Definitely a win-win.
Creator Angelo David Pisacreta is a thinning-hair specialist, so he knows a thing or two. He created Hair Detox to battle thinning hair from within. Things like hormonal imbalances play a key role, which explains why so many women lose their hair postpartum. He also donates his time to the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation and the Fortune Society.
I love the Hair Detox vitamins, but I also wanted a serum that goes directly on the roots. I was scrolling through Instagram and came across an ad that caught my attention. Vegamour Gro Hair Serum. I figured it was worth a shot and let me tell you… this stuff is magic.
I used the serum and the delicious gummies for 90 days, as recommended. Within the first 30 days, I noticed a huge difference. My bald spots were growing in and I was shedding a ton less. By 90 days, I felt I could start putting my hair down, again. It was an amazing transformation.
I put the serum directly on my scalp, especially where I lost the most hair and on my center part. Today, I have loads of new growth. Sure, I look a bit like a chia pet, but I will take that. My roots are fuller and I can actually part my hair to the side without being insecure about my scalp showing (although, as Gen Z told us loud and clear, a side-part is not it anymore).
I know I keep having to trim my hair so it could all grow the same, but I’m not there yet. I have about 2 inches of growth and I’m ecstatic. It takes a lot out of you mentally when you lose your hair, especially after all the other traumatic postpartum incidents. Of course, baby uses my hair as his pull-up helper, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
If you’re going through hair loss due to postpartum, it grows back. I heard this so many times and at the time, it didn’t help at all. But just know, you’ll be back to your regular self in no time. You can use serums and vitamins to help the process along. I was extremely lucky to only deal with the hair loss for a couple of months, but I know sometimes it takes a lot longer. Keep taking prenatals, if possible or jump on one of my recommended vitamins. I was at a point where I was ready to try anything, but make sure it is right for you!
